250 Years of Independence

Many of us struggle with celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States. At the July 4th Independence Day Farmers Market, we asked the community to write a love letter to the Declaration of Independence.  Here are a few of the letters:

“Thank you for all the protection offered, it was the catalyst to reaching the American dream!”

“Pray for healing our nation, life and liberty for our American experiment!”

This year’s 250th anniversary of the United States is a moment to celebrate—and to be honest. Our nation was founded on bold words about equality, liberty, and government by the people. But those freedoms were never shared equally. Enslaved people, Native Americans, Women, and so many others were denied the very rights proclaimed in our founding documents. Yet the story of America is the story of people pushing the words “all men are created equal” closer to the truth. Abolitionists, suffragists, civil rights leaders, labor organizers, LGBTQ+ activists, and countless ordinary citizens have expanded the circle of “We the People.” Every major step forward has come when people organized, voted, and refused to give up on the idea that our country can do better.

For Democrats, this anniversary is not just a commemoration—it’s a call to action. Defending voting rights, protecting reproductive freedom, tackling climate change, strengthening public education, and fighting for economic fairness are not new struggles. They are the continuation of a 250‑year effort to make America live up to its promise. Our task in this historic year is simple and profound: to carry that work forward, to choose HOPE over cynicism, and to keep building a more just, more inclusive democracy for the next generation. We are the authors now. And, as Democrats, we choose to write a chapter of courage, inclusion, and justice—for all.

We invite everyone to join us – whether it’s attending a meeting, participating in demonstrations and protests or meeting candidates.
